Don Hernán, the 101-year-old grandfather, who scored Messi’s goals, passed away

The soul of South American football suffered a serious blow this Saturday. Hernán Mastrángelo, better known as Don Hernán, died this morning, at 101 years old, in Argentina.

His name had been made known in the middle last year, after Julián, his grandson, shared on social networks that the purpose of the centenary was to recordall Lionel Messi’s goals in an agenda.

” He’s Lio’s biggest fan”, Julián, recognized on social networks as ‘julireview’, had said in the video that catapulted Don Hernán into the public arena.

“Of course he has technology, he doesn’t have a phone or a computer, he writes down all of Messi’s goals on these sheets”, the young digital creator explained at the time.

The impact of Mastrangelo’s habit was so great that the video reached the eyes of Lionel Messi, who, upon hearing the story, sent him a fraternal greeting:

“Hello, Hernán! Obviously your story came to me and it seems crazy to me that you keep your goals saved that way. I want to send you a huge hug and thank you for the work you do, for the follow-up and wish you the best. See you soon!”, said the soccer star.

(Also: James Rodríguez, absent in the landslide suffered by Al Rayyan in Qatar).

“It was a huge surprise, thanks for seeing you face to face. Thank you very much, Messi, for what you are doing. I will always follow behind you until the end“, the grandfather replied at the time after greeting his idol.

The game of Don Hernán

This morning it was Julián himself, Don Hernán’s grandson, who reported his death.

“Goodbye ‘abu’. Thanks to you, he left calm and really happy: Greetings from Messi, ‘famous’ and with joy, that’s why I upload this photo in which we smile together with the one from Argentina. I will complete the notebook of his goals for you“, Julián pointed out on his Inst account agram.

So far, Lionel Messi has not publicly commented on the death of Don Hernán.
