Earthbound creator Shigesato Itoi urges us to watch tonight’s Nintendo Direct. Mother 3, is that you?

Nintendo will broadcast the first presentation Nintendo Direct of 2022 tonight on Wednesday at 23:00 Spanish peninsular time. It’s one of the big ones, 40 minutes with information about future games for Nintendo Switch, and we have many bets: Splatoon 3, Kirby, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Hollow Knight Silksong

So many rumours, and so many expectations, do they leave any room for surprises? What if it was finally time for Mother 3?

A tweet from Shigesato Itoi, creator of the Mother / Earthbound saga, to his more than two million followers, has raised alarm bells:

According to the translation, Itoi seems to anticipate that 7 AM is going to be amazing (the time in Japan when the Nintendo Direct is broadcast) and that “it may be snowing”.

We didn’t get to appreciate the relationship between the snow, the time, the fact that there is a Nintendo Direct today and some (if any) relationship with any of their games. What is clear is that Itoi seems very interested in us seeing this Nintendo Direct.

And that’s worth mentioning, since Itoi doesn’t have much ties to Nintendo at the moment. As a game developer, he hasn’t worked beyond Mother 3, which came out on the Game Boy Advance in 2006, only in Japan.

Gaming has very particular requirements in terms of connection. So it is surely a good idea to bet on a gaming router.

Shigesato Itoi, dedicated mainly to writing (his was the book Ask Iwata, recently published in Spain and dedicated to the late president of Nintendo Satoru Iwata), wrote and directed the Mother trilogy ( Earthbound in Europe) released on the NES, SNES and GBA between 1989 and 2006, which later influenced the popular Undertale.

Mother 3 has become almost a myth , because it only came out in Japan in 2006, and despite its great criticism, Nintendo was never interested in locating it in the West: it was a niche series, a strange and controversial RPG, and that also came out for GBA when its successor, Nintendo DS, it was already beginning to replace it.

For years fans have been asking Nintendo to reissue it, and indeed it did so on the Wii U Virtual Console… again only in Japan. Reggie Fils-Aimé himself often jokes about the game never coming, while fans have been working on a complete fan translation.
