Sony AI, an Artificial Intelligence company founded in 2020 subsidiary of Sony (not part of Sony Interactive Entertainment, i.e. PlayStation) and Polyphony Digital, creators of the Gran Turismo driving saga, have unveiled their revolutionary new technology, “Gran Turismo Sophy”.
Gran Turismo Sophy has been in development for two years and is an intelligence agent artificial capable of challenging and surprising the best professional Gran Turismo Sport players in the world.
Through its development, and thanks to the realistic driving physics perfected by Polyphony Digital in its video games, Sophy stands apart from other AI engines in its ability to react to the physics of the real world.
The CEO of Sony Group Corporation, Kenichiro Yoshida, has presented this advance, a “superhuman AI that can race competitively against the best Gran Turismo drivers em>”.
Sophy is able to understand how to use the physics around her to her advantage, such as the slipstream that can increase the speed of the car beyond the maximum values of the car, or what is the best line to take a curve or overtake, always taking into account the safe distance to avoid collisions.

Professional Gran Turismo Sport players contributed to the development of Sophy, with one of them, Emily Jones, admitting to being inspired by AI to test new lines. How Sophy works is detailed in a scientific paper in the journal Nature.
Gran Turismo Sophy’s rendering takes place in the cloud, and Yoshida points out that this is an example of the potential to use the PlayStation infrastructure in the cloud.
This AI will be integrated into future installments of the Gran Turismo series, so it is not part of Gran Turismo 7, which will be released on March 4 on PS4 and PS5 (and you can read our trailer here).
