They’re one of many different collectibles in the game, and often require you to complete a quick environmental and traversal puzzle in order to reach them.

What to do with black boxes in Horizon Forbidden West

When you’ve gotten a Black Box, you’ll want to go to Memorial Grove which is on the west side of the map, shown in the screenshot below.

Head to the main entrance and follow the path as it winds. Instead of turning left into the main room, go straight ahead and you’ll find a Black Box collector named Untalla next to a small hut.

Speaking with Untalla, you will learn that they are fascinated by the black boxes of ancient literates around the world. If you bring them to him, he will reward you handsomely.

Specifically, you can trade a Black Box for all sorts of different machine components that can be used to upgrade your weapons and armor. Each Black Box you return can be exchanged for one of the machine components on your list.
