Donation has a very important impact on people’s quality of life; however, the need for organs and tissues is very great.

There are approximately four thousand people in the country on the waiting list to receive a donation. For this reason, it is essential to raise awareness in society about the importance of donation and its benefits, says Dr. Liz Niño, operational coordinator for donation at Fundación Clínica Shaio.

During 2019, a total of 1,303 transplants were registered in the country in the RedData INS information system.

The arrival of the coronavirus had a negative influence on obtaining donors, which meant that in the first half of 2021 only 320 organ transplants will be carried out.

Making the decision to donate is a right that Colombians currently have, and it must be respected and made effective once the person dies, since this decision allows improving the quality of life of patients who have a transplant as their only option. The number of people who need these donations grows every year, and many end up dying waiting for important organs and tissues such as the kidneys, heart, liver, pancreas, intestine, lungs, bones, skin, among others.

Who can donate?

The possible Donors are patients who die according to neurological criteria, this is known as brain death.

The donation process it focuses mainly on extracting the viable organs of the patient who has died; In the event that a patient dies from an acute heart attack or sudden death, an approach similar to the previous one is carried out, but only with the aim of obtaining the patient’s tissues, explains the Shaio Clinic’s donation operations coordinator.

Since 2016, the Congress of the Republic has approved Law 1805, which means that every Colombian who dies becomes a donor.

If the person does not wish to donate, they must carry out a notarial act, which must be filed with the National Institute of Health, in which they make clear their decision not to donate.
On the contrary, if they do not allow In writing this decision, the law presumes that the person at the time of death is a donor and the process begins once the death is confirmed.

One of the concerns of the relatives when defining the process of donation is knowing what it will be like and what is needed to be a donor.

It is essential to raise awareness in society about the importance of donation and its benefits

For example, the Shaio Clinic has established a donation program that is led and coordinated by highly qualified doctors, in addition to being accompanied by the unit of intensive care and the emergency service, which are the places where donors can possibly be detected.

Once the patient dies, the donation coordinating doctor approaches the family members to explain everything related to the issues legal, as well as the benefits that people who are on the waiting list could have.
On the other hand, the process of rescuing organs and tissues is reported in detail and the delivery of the body under the best aesthetic conditions is guaranteed. possible, says Dr. Liz Niño.
