Deforestation in Colombia has increased after the peace process
The Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina presents environmental problems due to the incorrect disposal of hazardous waste. In addition to this, due to the geographical location of this insular area of ??the country, there is a logistical difficulty for the management of this waste.

Currently, there are no authorized agents that contribute to the closure of the cycle of this post-consumer waste, or plants that ensure the correct final disposal. Even the last day of massive collection was in April 2021 in which 54 tons were transferred to Bogotá, of which 2,007 kg were drugs or expired medicines.
It is thus that, with the support of strategic allies to Punto Azul, an entity that integrates 97% of the laboratories in Colombia and about 200 representatives of the mass consumption industry, the Ministry of Health of Last year, the Government, Coralina and the Chamber of Commerce of the Archipelago announced the first open call for the community itself to develop or strengthen an enterprise that provides a solution to this problem.
This is the first open call that arises as a response to the lack of authorized managers in the area and aims to strengthen the participation of different public and private actors, for the consolidation of an operator that manages waste post-consumer locally and that at the same time generates employment for the islanders, consolidating an optimal and adequate environmental solution.

The open call invites Colombian citizens between 18 and 35 years, who are domiciled in the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, who are interested in starting or strengthening a business project.
The resources delivered by Punto Azul will have the exclusive purpose of financially supporting one (1) business initiative of an entrepreneur(s) that meets the requirements established in these terms to provide the Post-Consumer Medicines Waste Management service.
“For several years Punto Azul has been committed to the community, the island authorities and the Mini Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, on issues of medication waste management and containers and packaging. To date, we have guaranteed the management of nearly 7,000 kilograms of post-consumer drug waste. In order to take action with concrete initiatives that contribute to sustainable growth, we decided to work hand in hand with the community, the Government, the Chamber of Commerce, the Secretary of Health, Coralina and the Military Forces to elect through an open call. , a waste manager that we can support and develop as an environmental and social entrepreneur. The idea is that together we can build a solution that avoids a significant environmental impact, in one of the most beautiful and richest regions in environmental terms, in Colombia”, commented Jorge Trujillo, executive director of the Punto Azul Corporation.
