”Phil, let’s do it together”, Kamiya’s invitation to Xbox to recover Scalebound

Cancelling a video game is not a dish of good taste. And much less when it looks as good as Scalebound. The draconian Platinum Games action RPG (Nier Automata)was going to be one of the great Microsoft exclusives… until it was cancelled.

Much has been said about Scalebound since then. From the elements rescued for Bayonetta 3 (a game that Platinum is preparing for Nintendo) to Hideki Kamiya’s apologies to Microsoft.

However, a small possibility opens up for Scalebound. .. although it all depends on Microsoft. In a recent interview with IGN Japan (via GameSpot), Platinum Games states that they want to resume the project.

This is not the first time this has happened. In the first place, the president Atsushi Inaba assures that Kamiya wants to recover the project, although for that he needs to convince Phil Spencer (and Microsoft) to finance the development of Scalebound.

Kamiya has always wanted to do Scalebound. So we’d like to have a proper discussion with Microsoft”, says Atsushi. But pay attention to what the genius Kamiya says later in this interview.

We all know the eccentric humor of Hideki Kamiya, one of the great figures in the industry (creator of Okami and Devil May Cry). And it seems that Scalebound is one of his deepest desires.

We have done a lot of work on it, and it is useless for Microsoft to keep the game in its current form , so we’d like to do something about it (laughs). Phil! Let’s do it together”.

Although he says it humorously, it’s It’s clear that Kamiya wants to resume the Scalebound project. This action RPG was based on the hero’s cooperation with his dragon, with mechanics that Platinum has rescued for Bayonetta 3 (such as controlling monsters).

The ball is in the roof of Microsoft. Kamiya apologized to those from Redmond a few months ago, as he considers that the breakup (and subsequent cancellation)was also due to Platinum.

The two reasons that led to the cancellation of Scalebound (according to Kamiya) were the difficulty of adapting to Unreal Engine 4, and inexperience of the studio to develop the cooperative mode of the role-playing game.

Will Scalebound return one day? It is a possibility, although everything will depend on how fruitful the meeting between Platinum and Microsoft is, if it happens. Should development resume, it would be a sight to see that dragon reborn on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
