Sunrise, the studio behind Gundam or Cowboy Bebop, becomes Bandai Namco Filmworks

The winds of change are blowing for the legendary anime studio Sunrise, which will no longer be known by that name.


As reported by IT Media (via Crunchyroll) , Sunrise is renamed Bandai Namco Filmworks, a new division of Bandai Namco that will handle all collective efforts to bring its many IP’s to film and television.


Despite After the change, Sunrise will continue to exist as a brand for the studio’s original anime, as well as those its subdivisions work on, such as Sunrise Origin, which collaborates in the production of the My Hero Academia anime (Boku no H?r? Akademia).


Sunrise was founded in 1972 by former members of Mushi Production, the studio created by mangaka Osamu Tezuka (Tezuka Osamu) to produce anime of his works, such as Astro Boy.

Currently, Sunrise has the sequel to Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway, the 2021 film, in production and Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island, a new version of an episode of the original anime of the franchise.
